Lopez made his reputation at Pipeline; from there he went on to a lifelong career in surfing, and more recently in snowboarding. He co-founded Lightning Bolt Maui surfboards (lightningboltmaui.com), was instrumental in developing the high-performance shortboard, and has appeared in many films. He lives in Bend, Oregon, with his wife and son.
